The Ramblings of a Lubbock Chick

Whether it's "in the rear view mirror" or "growing nearer and dearer," happiness is indeed Lubbock, Texas.

Nearly Run Over by an SUV

Drivers in this town can be so oblivious. I was in a CROSSWALK on my bike and was nearly run over by an idiot driving a huge red SUV who was making a right on RED.

Why can't people in these big monsters open their eyes before plowing over bicyclists? Ugh.

Long, long absence!

Wow. I've been a very bad girl. No blogs in a long time! There's been a lot going on in Lubbock lately. The Chippendales came back witout incident. Bill and Chelsea Clinton have stopped by to visit. There have been a few dust storms. A new flyover on the Marsha Sharp Freeway has opened. David Miller is still praying. Linda Deleon is still in office, despite a recent third attempt at a recall election. Pit Bull mania has swept the city. The neighborhood where I live has had five arsons in the past three months. The weather has been cold, hot, cold, dusty, snowy, cold, then hot.

I update MySpace much, much more often than this thing. Yes, I have passed over to the dark side that is MySpace. If you want to check me out, go to  myspace.com/lubbockchick. Send me a friend request, and I'll hook you up.

The Coolest Summer....Ever?

I heard the other day on the news that, if Lubbock doesn't hit 100 degrees at all this summer, it will be the first summer on record that we didn't have even one 100-degree day. I know that I have really appreciated the cool temperatures this summer...as has my bank account. Summer electric bills can be killers.

I was in central Texas the other day.  It was 99 degree and about 65% humidity. I thought I was going to melt into a pile of sweat. Ugh. It was really a time I was gratefull to live up here where it's high and dry.

Lubbock: It's Not Mayberry Any More

(Not that it ever was.)

Is it just me, or media coverage, or is Lubbock becoming a crime-ridden, unsafe city? I think we've had 10 murders so far this year. Our high was 16 murders in 2004. Funny, I don't remember being worried back in '04 or feeling like Lubbock was becoming unsafe, but now, I do. Perhaps it's because two of this year's murders happened about three blocks from my house. Perhaps it's because you can't turn on the local news without hearing about crime. Today, for instance, at 5:30 this morning I was lying in bed hearing about shots fired on 39th and Q, a robbery, and another stabbing.

Perhaps part of it is the recent muder that happened in Southwest Lubbock...a good neighborhood where random murders aren't supposed to happen. Anytime you have a murder of an affluent white man in Lubbock, increased media coverage follows. We haven't heard too much about the other nine Lubbock murder victims this year.

Deer Carcasses on I-27

I have seen two dead deer along I-27 out toward the strip. Since when were there deer in Lubbock? Are hunters dumping them? Am I hallucinating? Or are there really deer in Lubbock now?? Hmmm...

PETA Protest Planned for 19th Street KFC May 17

According to a PETA press release, Lubbock will be the home to a KFC protest tomorrow. A crippled chicken will cross the road at the 19th Street KFC--a comment on the cruelty of the chicken industry. Below is the press release:

Beleaguered ‘Bird’ Sets Sights on Local KFC to Protest Factory-Farming Abuses

Lubbock, Texas -- Holding a sign reading, "Broken Wings and Legs," a giant crippled "chicken" will repeatedly cross the road in front of a local KFC to lead a protest against the company’s abusive treatment of chickens. Other PETA members will distribute leaflets to passersby.

Date: Thursday, May 17,
Time: 3:30 p.m.
Place: KFC, 2219 19th St., Lubbock

The more than 850 million chickens killed each year for KFC are tortured in ways that would result in felony cruelty-to-animals charges if other animals were the victims. They are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled from the weight of their massive upper bodies. Many have their throats slit while they are still conscious and are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. KFC ignored recommendations for animal welfare improvements made by members of its own advisory panel, including five who have since resigned in frustration.

"KFC stands for cruelty in our book," says PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich. "If KFC employees abused cats or dogs the way they abuse chickens, they could be thrown in prison on felony charges of cruelty to animals."

Your attendance is invited. For more information, please visit KentuckyFriedCruelty.com.

Lubbock Chick is a vegetarian, but a non-evangelical one. Join the protest or protest the protest. It's up to you.
