Pet Peeve: 50th & University

I took one of those silly surveys on MySpace, and one of the questions was "What annoys you?" I thought about it for awhile. Generally, I am a pretty laid back person who doesn't get too easily annoyed. However, I did think of something. Here is something that annoys the hell out of me:

It's those idiot drivers going south-bound on University at 50th Street in the right lane. They know that the right lane ends at the edge of the Plains Capital Bank parking lot, but they stupidly get in that lane anyway. Then, when the light changes, they try to race ahead and pull over in front of you. ASSHOLES! We can stop this, Lubbock. DON'T LET THEM IN! EVER!! Make them go to the damned bank or that silly little access road and think about how stupid they are.

City Having To Tweak Red-Light Camera Locations To Maximize Revenue

The 12 locations for the red-light cameras the city decided on have been deemed ineffective. According to Marsha Reed, “After running the video at each of these locations there was not enough violations to warrant the camera equipment.” So, is the city scrapping the idea of the red-light cameras? NO--they're looking into changing the locations in order to assure that there will be enough violations to add to the city's coffers.

This issue is clearly not about safety, but about increasing the city's budget, not that anyone was really naive enough to have ever thought it was about safety.

Vanilla Ice To Visit Hub City

That's right...Vanilla Ice will be in the Depot District this weekend, according to WakeWorld online:

LUBBOCK, TX - Some of the top pro wakeboarders in the state are heading west to take part in the first annual Riptank Rail Jam - Jam at the Garden, presented by Nissan North America. It's the 3rd stop of the 2007 Texas Wakeboard Tour. In addition to wakeboarding, this action sports block party will feature plenty of live music headlined by Texas native - Vanilla Ice!

Apparently, if one heads down to the Depot this weekend, one will see the double insanity of wakeboarding sans lake and Vanilla Ice. Who says there's nothing to do in Lubbock?

Men's Health Magazine Completely Mental...Rates Lubbock Drivers "Safe"

Lubbock drivers among the safest? No way. However, According to Channel 11, Men's Health Magazine listed Lubbock as a city of safe drivers--the second safest in Texas, in fact. Story from kcbd.com below:

Some of the safest drivers in the state may be right here in Lubbock. A new study printed in Men's Health ranks the safest cities for drivers in the country. Des Moines, Iowa is named the safest in the country while Columbia, South Carolina is ranked the worst. In Texas, Corpus Christi is ranked as the worst place for drivers, and El Paso the best. Lubbock is number two right behind El Paso. The study used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, All State Insurance and the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Are you kidding me?

Shelby Knox Goes To Maine, Spreads The Good Word About Lubbock!

Shelby Knox spoke at Bowdoin College in Maine, talking about her documentary, "The Education of Shelby Knox" and calling for comprehensive sex education in schools.

In an article in the Bowdoin Orient, Maine readers get a lovely glimpse of life in Lubbock:

In Lubbock, Texas, when students ask teachers about sex, the teachers must reply, "Abstinence is the only way to prevent STDs and teen pregnancy." The town has the highest percentage of teen pregnancies and acquired STDs per year in Texas and one of the highest in the country.

As a high school sophomore, Knox joined the Lubbock Youth Commission, an organization sponsored by the mayor to give a voice to Lubbock youth. Concerned with [church pastor Ed] Ainsworth's version of sex education (the documentary includes a scene in which Ainsworth warns that an STD can be transmitted through a handshake), the group campaigned for comprehensive sex education in the public schools. After Knox and the youth commission received considerable media coverage, the school board allowed them to present their case. Their arguments, however, did not convince the conservative Christian-dominated board.
It would be nice if people in this town would do something positive that a young person could make a documentary about. Instead, our talented young people document how ignorant Lubbock is and the rest of the country hears about it. Yay, Lubbock.

Lubbock Loosens Up? Too Much?

Lubbock can't do anything right. According to an opinion article in the Daily Toreador, Lubbock's ABC rodeo was too offensive because some Hooter's girls had a banana-eating contest for entertainment. I, too, thought that rodeos were family fare. But I sure don't wanna complain about Lubbock being too permissive...we might have another Chippendale's incident.
